From the painting of 1966, this image has little to do with flower power or Erich Segal’s tearjerker but rather the artist’s Christian Science upbringing. The church that he and his parents attended was adorned with a banner that read, ‘God is Love’. LOVE has become a cultural icon and has been used extensively throughout the art world and media, with and without the artist’s approval. Robert Indiana has revisited this theme many times himself since.
